1. Introduction
Sitt Opera NPC acknowledges that HIV and AIDS remain critical public health challenges that affect communities, workplaces, and the creative industry. As an organisation committed to social development and the empowerment of artists, Sitt Opera upholds the principles of dignity, equality, and non-discrimination for all individuals affected by or living with HIV.
2. Purpose of the Policy
This policy aims to:
- Promote awareness and understanding of HIV/AIDS within Sitt Opera and the communities we serve.
- Prevent the spread of HIV through education, responsible practices, and open dialogue.
- Ensure a supportive environment for all employees, volunteers, and beneficiaries living with HIV or AIDS.
- Comply with South African labour and health legislation, including the Employment Equity Act (No. 55 of 1998) and the National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB and STIs.
3. Guiding Principles
- Non-Discrimination: No member, employee, or beneficiary will face discrimination based on their HIV status.
- Confidentiality: HIV status is personal and confidential. No individual will be required to disclose their status.
- Education and Awareness: Sitt Opera commits to providing ongoing HIV/AIDS awareness programmes, workshops, and campaigns during key events and community outreach initiatives.
- Health and Wellness: The organisation encourages voluntary testing, counselling, and treatment. Support will be provided through referral to professional health services where needed.
- Safe Practices: Sitt Opera promotes responsible behaviour and the use of universal precautions in all activities to prevent transmission.
4. Implementation and Responsibilities
- The Managing Director and Programme Coordinators will ensure that HIV/AIDS awareness is integrated into all community engagement and youth development projects.
- Staff and volunteers are encouraged to participate in annual wellness days and information sessions.
- All organisational materials and productions will uphold positive, stigma-free representation of persons living with HIV.
5. Monitoring and Review
This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure relevance and compliance with national health standards. Amendments will be made in consultation with staff, beneficiaries, and board members.
6. Declaration
Sitt Opera NPC reaffirms its commitment to building a healthy, informed, and compassionate arts community where no person is left behind due to HIV/AIDS stigma or discrimination.
